Autoblog visits the San Diego Auto Museum, Part II - The Bikes

Today we continue our photographic tour of the San Diego Auto Museum. Despite the fact that the building is dedicated to four-wheelers, there are actually more motorcycles there than cars. That's alright with us, as the bikes on display are some of the coolest machines that history has to offer. Starting with some of the earliest cycles powered by rudimentary engines, it's easy to see just how far we've come in just about one-hundred years or so of mass production. Take a gander at some of the first motocross bikes, land speed record racers, rotary-powered cycles, modern choppers and scooters (including one from Harley-Davidson) in our gallery below. Our personal fave? That would be the 1951 Vincent Black Shadow.

Spyker to build lightweight race-derived C8 LM 85

Filed under: Autoblog — Noah Joseph @ 5:33 pm

Take your exotic sports car and put it in a room with its racing counterpart. Put on some R&B, dim the lights and wait nine months. It's a winning formula that has worked for some of the world's best automakers and resulted in such stunning performance vehicles as the Ferrari 430 Scuderia, Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera, Aston Martin DBS and Porsche 911 GT3 RS, to name just a few. Now Spyker is getting ready to cue up the Barry White with the upcoming LM 85.

Named for the starting position of the Spyker C8 GTR2 racer at Le Mans, the LM 85 will be the latest race-derived, hardcore exotic sportscar. It will be based on the short-wheelbase C8 Laviolette, but lightened and tightened. Power could be as high as 450 horses, while the suspension is expected to be stiffened and weight removed to get a 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph) figure near 3.8 seconds and top speed bumping the 300 km/h (186 mph) mark. Only a highly symbolic 24 examples are expected to be built in an effort to bring the niche Dutch automaker back from the brink.

Spy shots: RR4 wearing even less camouflage

Filed under: Autoblog — Jonathon Ramsey @ 3:47 pm

The RR4 -- the Rolls-Royce that asks that you "don't call me 'baby'" -- is slowly undressing, striptease-like, before its final reveal at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show. Previous spy shots hinted at rear suicide doors, or coach doors as Rolls-Royce refers to them, and now it is official: the hinges on the rear door are on the rear of the door. The car has plenty of Phatom-esque cues, and although it doesn't look anything like the initial sketch, it looks like it could be a very attractive proposition when it shows up for the big dance. Still no word on engines, but we have no doubt its output will be something along the lines of prodigious. Thanks for the tip, Andrus!

Tanner tests his Top Gear skills on the Lambo Reventon

Filed under: Autoblog — Jonathon Ramsey @ 1:53 pm

One-third of American Top Gear, Tanner Foust, spent a day in the Lamborghini Reventon, and here's his verdict: "Thumbs up big girl!" The fractional bit of additional horsepower didn't mean much to him, but he did say the brakes were more capable, and, surprise, the car is quite wide and people like to stare at it. After six hours on Italy's B-roads, that basically sums up his impressions. Since he didn't have too much to say in print, we really do hope he's saving the zingers for the show...

Ultimate rally car collection hits the block

Filed under: Autoblog — Jonathon Ramsey @ 12:09 pm

Click above for a gallery of David Sutton's rally car collection

In the eighties, the late David Sutton owned the company that prepared rally cars for Audi UK. It turns out he was collecting cars at the same time as he was preparing them, and putting them in his Historic Motors Ltd museum. The assortment includes seven Audis, some of which are Group B monsters, as well as an RS200 Cosworth, a couple of Lancias, a 1944 Volvo, and even a Skoda. Now the lot's being sold, 22 cars in all, through Morris & Welford. It's the kind of collection that, even if you had the time, money, and connections, would probably take you years to assemble individually. But you can have it all, right now... if you have what is likely to be an enormous sum of cash. Check out the other items on offer in the gallery below.

Weekend Entertainment: “One Cab’s Family”

Follow the jump to watch "One Cab's Family"

Judging by your comments, watching "Susie the Little Blue Coupe" yesterday brought back memories for many of you. Another thing that became very apparent is that you also hold Tex Avery's 1952 short, "One Cab's Family" in extremely high regard, and commenter "raf 280z" stuck a link to it in the thread. Like Susie, the Cab family's story is an endlessly re-watchable classic. Mom and Dad taxi welcome their adorable little boy into the family garage (note the wallpaper border inside -- one of many great touches), but as junior gets older, he gets a little rebellious, and trouble follows -- big trouble. So, grab your kids, sit back and enjoy it after the jump. "Nurse, check his oil, fill 'im up with gas and we'll take him home!"

Click the C6.R for a high-res gallery from the race

As part of the revival of the Detroit Grand Prix at Belle Isle last year, the Detroit Sports Car Challenge was added as the highlight of Saturday's activities. The sports car race is back this year as the ninth round of the American Le Mans Series. For those who have never checked out an ALMS race, it's one of the best and most exciting forms of motorsport anywhere. Highcroft Racing's Acura ARX-01B captured the pole and led much of the first half of the race ahead of the De Ferran Racing Acura. If you TiVoed the race and don't want to ruin the surprise, you can just check out the gallery and come back later to see the full results after the jump. Otherwise, you know what to do.

Autoblog visits the San Diego Auto Museum, Part I - The Cars

Click the 1948 Tucker above for more from the San Diego Auto Museum

While on a recent trip to San Diego to ride some dirtbikes, we decided to check out some the sights that the city had to offer. Of course, being the car-obsessed nerds individuals that we are, it didn't take too long for us to end up at the San Diego Automobile Museum. Tomorrow, we'll bring you the best of what we saw on two wheels, but today is devoted to the cars. From some of the earliest four-wheelers (and three-wheelers) right on through to some Italian exotics from the '60s, '70s and '90s, there was plenty there to keep our interest. Our favorite has to be the rear-engined Tucker from 1948 -- very cool. We've assembled a gallery of pics below and have captioned them where appropriate. Enjoy!

Shoot your TV: Jesse James is a Dead Man coming soon

Filed under: Autoblog — Jeremy Korzeniewski @ 5:34 pm

For those of you who just can't get enough Jesse James in your life, we have good news. The rest of you, commence eye-rolling. The tattooed chopper builder will soon be back on the small screen, this time on Spike TV. His new vehicle is called Jesse James is a Dead Man, which isn't totally accurate unless you're referring to some of his famous forebears. Although the world needs another "reality" TV show like we need a festering case of hemorrhoids, this series will focus not on James' welding torch-wielding antics, but will instead follow Mr. Bullock as he moves from one supposedly dangerous activity to another. Great. Seriously, how bad will this show be? Our guess: Fear Factor bad. We can smell the impending suckage from here... like a steaming hot pile of rotting cabbage.

Just when you thought that the reality TV explosion couldn't possibly get any more far-fetched and ridiculous, the execs go and do something like this... and completely redeem themselves!

Weekend Entertainment: “Susie the Little Blue Coupe”

Filed under: Autoblog — Alex Nunez @ 3:37 pm

Follow the jump to watch the short

Thanks to frequent commenter and tipster "catgirlshyla" for sending in a link to a video of Walt Disney's Susie the Little Blue Coupe, an animated short that originally debuted theatrically in 1952. As you can plainly see, the Disney/Pixar gang clearly used Susie as the inspiration for how to give life to the rides in 2006's Cars -- eyes in the windshield; grilles and bumpers forming mouths. It's just as effective and charming (perhaps even more so) in decades-old hand-drawn animation as it is in 21st-century CGI. The story's very straightforward -- it chronicles Susie's life cycle from new car to used car to junk heap. Don't worry, there's still a happy ending -- this is vintage Disney, remember. Anyway, this is good stuff. Follow the jump and enjoy.

Tie a pork chop around its neck - Telegraph counts down 100 ugliest cars

Filed under: Autoblog — Dan Roth @ 1:52 pm

It didn't start off as a way for readers of England's Telegraph newspaper to engage in the popular pastime of bashing American cars, but it wound up that way. To be fair, there are plenty of odd and ugly vehicles from all over the place on the Telegraph's list of the 100 ugliest cars of all time, and the voters didn't beat up on the colonies too badly. With so much homegrown hideousness to choose from, we can see how they'd be reluctant to throw stones.

The usual suspects are accounted for, of course. The Pacer is there, as are the Cayenne, BMW's 1 and 7 Series, though we thought the Rolls Royce Camargue was conspicuously low on the list. C'mon, guys, stop going easy on it just because you've got hometown pride. The Camargue really was horrid, no matter how well it sold. There are also vehicles that don't belong; cars that aren't even remotely ugly. The Boxster, XJS, TR7, and Chrysler 300 don't strike us as repulsive. The readers were almost spot-on, though, voting the Fiat Multipla into the second place slot. Number one is a car that everyone loves to hate, but it doesn't strike us as uglier than the Multipla. That vehicle? Aztek. Seriously.

VIDEO: Hubinette’s BFG Charger kicks like a mule

Filed under: Autoblog — Chris Shunk @ 12:12 pm

Pro motor sports may draw immense crowds, but on the boob tube, the football is king. That could be the reason Team Mopar and BFGoodrich utilized the pigskin in its latest TV ad showcasing controlled drifting. Hit the jump to see Samuel Hubinette pilot the Mopar drift Charger to and through a tee'd-up football as the rear quarter panel plays placekicker. Though not as cool as the commercial that shows Hubinette sliding the Charger through an aircraft hanger, it's definitely worth a look.

SEAT Ibiza Cupra unveiled

Filed under: Autoblog — Damon Lavrinc @ 10:49 am

Click above for a high-res gallery of the SEAT Ibiza Cupra.

In Europe, budget-minded pistonheads have a treasure trove of hot hatches to choose from, and SEAT will be adding another model to the mix later this year.

The Ibiza Cupra will be officially unveiled in Paris, but Seat has dropped the first few images and a handful of specs ahead of its official unveiling in the City of Light this October. The Cupra is packing a twin-turbocharged, 1.4-liter TSI four underhood, sending 178 hp to the front wheels through a seven-speed DSG gearbox. Traction control and ESP are part of the package, along with a stiffer suspension, 17-inch wheels and bolstered buckets. The exterior benefits from a new fascia incorporating massive grilles and tiny fog lamps, side skirts and a new rear bumper.

Prices and performance stats haven't been released yet, but the Renaultsport Clio 197 competitor should be priced around £16,000 when it hits dealers in Europe in December.

This is the ride you’re looking for: Electric XP-34 Landspeeder replica

Filed under: Autoblog — Alex Nunez @ 9:20 am

Filed under:

Click above for a gallery of the Deutsch Landspeeder. Click here for even more

Daniel Deutsch is a former Lucasfilm employee, and we want what's in his garage. Deutsch, in addition to building R2-D2s, has a full-scale functional replica of Luke Skywalker's XP-34 landspeeder. Instead of a repulsorlift, Deutsch's speeder is powered by an electric drive system that gives him a 25 mph top speed "several miles" of range off a single charge.
We assume that's enough for him to go out and retrieve Artoo when he wanders away from the homestead. (Deutsch really should slap a restraining bolt on the little guy.) And as for his speeder? Never mind the GEM, that is the ultimate NEV. On the downside, ever since the XP-38 came out, the resale value on these things sucks.

Empty the 401k: Riddler-winning Ferrambo up for sale

Filed under: Autoblog — John Neff @ 8:01 pm

Click above for gallery of the Ferrambo

We first alerted you to the Ferrambo's existence back in late 2007 when the build was nearing completion. The brainchild of Mike Warn and Tim Divers of Divers Street Rods, the Ferrambo is the result of mashing together a 1960 Nash Rambler Wagon and a Ferrari 360, along with a ridiculous amount of custom fabrication. The product is truly neither car, with the original Nash donating mainly its body and a wrecked 2002 Ferrari 360 its 3.6L V8 engine and 6-speed tranny. The rest is all made by hand, including the custom frame that accommodates mid-mounting the Ferrari V8 behind the two front seats.

What's under the hood then? A set of custom fit leather luggage that matches the hide used to upholster the interior. So impressive is the Ferrambo that it won this year's coveted Riddler award at the 2008 Detroit Autorama. If you don't know what the Riddler is then, as the car's builders say, the Ferrambo is not for you. But the Ferrambo is for someone who has got lots of money and an appreciation for fine craftsmanship and the automotive oddities, as Mike and Tim are putting it up for sale. They don't list the asking price, but we imagine it's quite a bit more than the sum of its parts. Check out the Ferrambo for yourself in our gallery below, and if you're really interested, call GP Imports at 1-800-763-4016 for the price.
